NewSong MtM: William (Will) Shaw

Hello Will! I’m glad you were willing to join me on this series. Will is a fellow Genevans choir member, but one I barely knew before NewSong, but quickly grew to appreciate for his thoughtfulness, gentleness, and good humor. He has a remarkable pedigree in Geneva College and in music, being related to several well-known people in the college faculty.

If you could sum yourself up in five words, what would those words be?

Love people, people tire me. <chuckles> I love talking to people, but they tire me out.

Tell us a little about the rest of your family?

Six family members; four siblings. Two brothers and two sisters. Every member in my immediate family grew up in a Christian household. Everyone plays sports, primarily soccer and basketball.

Tell us a little about the current church you attend (at home or at college or both)?

We attend an OPC [Orthodox Presbyterian Church] weekly, morning and evening services. We’ve been attending for four years now, when we moved to the Philadelphia area. My family is heavily involved in church. Until I went off to college, I used to work the sound board, and we are often present at church events, such as for VBS, Sunday school, etc.

Why did you initially audition for NewSong?

My parents were in NewSong when they attended Geneva, and my grandmother directed NewSong [until 3-4 years ago], and so I grew up knowing what NewSong was and heard them perform many times. I knew from an early age that if I attended Geneva, I wanted to be in NewSong. I also enjoy ministry, and the opportunity is something I’d never gotten before and may never get again.

Final meal if you were on death row, and money being no object?

Steak, with my girlfriend’s garlic mashed potatoes. Raspberry cheesecake for dessert.

What do you do for relaxation or fun?

I enjoy playing video games when I can find the time for it. If I can find a group with the time for it, I enjoy playing table-top games, such as Dungeons and Dragons, etc. Obviously, music is another major fallback; messing around, seeing what I can do with my voice, range, accents, etc. I like the idea of voice acting, and while I’m not planning to go into that, I am impressed by their ability to create thirty or forty [different] characters with their voice alone.

One little-known fact about you?

It varies from group to group. One thing little-known about me is that I can be ridiculously OCD. For example, when I’m walking on the sidewalk, I have to step equally on each type of tile with each foot.

One song from NewSong’s current repertoire that gets stuck in your head?

Not a huge fan of this one, but “You Sons of the Gods” (Psalm 29, set to Traditional Normandy Carol) is catchy to a fault. Every verse is unresolved [musically] until the very last verse.

Favorite Bible hero/verse/book/passage/etc.?

Psalm 117. Within the Christian world, we [often] try to pretend to be smarter than we are and use big words, [sometimes] unnecessarily. Psalm 117 is very simple, with the longest word being “faithfulness”. In two verses, it gives a command, a reason, and an example of how the whole world praises God.

Favorite movie?

It changes from day to day… The Road to El Dorado. My friends from school and I are obsessed with that era of movies, and so we’ve watched that one and Emperor’s New Groove excessively.

What would you most want people to remember you for?

I enjoy writing, so in a perfect world where I could get away with that and still pay for college, I would want to write a book or two.

Any preferred genre?

I generally write reality-based fiction, although fantasy is enjoyable. The challenge with fantasy is world-building, whereas reality-based fiction allows me to focus more on just building the story.

Thanks for giving us some insight into your personality, Will! Sorry for making you hungry by making you think about and pick your favorite foods. 😀
